Giant George, the world’s tallest dog from 2010 to 2012, has passed away at the age of seven. The gentle, beloved Great Dane was celebrated in Dave Nasser and Lynne Barrett-Lee’s Giant George: Life with the World’s Biggest Dog.

There has recently been a lot of dogs/dog owner-lookalike contests, but what about dogs and old guys? Tom Cohen has a new doggie humor photo book out — Dogs With Old Man Faces — which looks like a fun one! (HuffPo)
My late dog, Petey, has posthumously made The Huffington Post — although I’m sure he wouldn’t be very impressed. He wasn’t much of a publicity hound!
Maria Popova at Brainpickings recently featured this charming childrens book, If Dogs Run Free, with lyrics by Bob Dylan, accompanied by equally colorful pictures by Scott Campbell.
Now if only dogs could play harmonica — wait, I’m sure there’s gotta be one on YouTube!
Is that the dog book world shaking, or are you just excited for this weekend’s Pets Aloud Litquake event? If you don’t know, Litquake is the San Francisco Bay Area’s annual week-long literati celebration featuring scheduled readings all over the city.
And It’s Just A Dog, along with several other fine animal-loving authors, including Melissa Cistaro, Jane Vandenburgh, DB Finnegan, Meg Donohue, and Rosaleen Bertolino, will be having a pet-friendly party at Woodland Pets & Treats in Mill Valley on Saturday, October 12, at 2 pm. So come for the stories, and stay for the snacks!

Seth Casteel, the scuba dog-diving photographer/creator of Underwater Dogs — has gone deeper under the surface to bring out a new child-friendly version of his best-selling dog photo book, Underwater Dogs – Kids Edition. Although both books are entertaining for kids of all ages, Casteel also uses the money from his funny pics of water-logged dogs to raise money for dog rescues.
Lewis Black is back with a new standup concert on InDemand called, aptly, Old Yeller. Unfortunately, I doubt this show is an homage to the tender, much-loved dying dog classic — but I’m sure Black will deliver the goods with his usual passionate comedy style.
Like its funny dog blog cousins, Texts From Dog and Dogshaming, what started out as a Tumblr blog has now become a book — Talking Animals in All Caps by Justin Valmassoi.

Delia Ephron, sister of the late romantic comedy legend, Nora Ephron, has a new book out called Sister Mother Husband Dog, Etc. It’s more about human family members than dogs — but still an enjoyable read. You can read my full review here.
And don’t judge the book by its cover, even if it does bear a remarkably similar jacket to the recent lit hit, Mother Daughter Me by Katie Hafner (right).
They say there is no such thing as bad dogs — just bad owners. However, the reality is much more complicated, as some dog owners don’t always get the pick of the litter, so to speak.
