Hear Pets Aloud…at Litquake!
Is that the dog book world shaking, or are you just excited for this weekend’s Pets Aloud Litquake event? If you don’t know, Litquake is the San Francisco Bay Area’s annual week-long literati celebration featuring scheduled readings all over the city.
And It’s Just A Dog, along with several other fine animal-loving authors, including Melissa Cistaro, Jane Vandenburgh, DB Finnegan, Meg Donohue, and Rosaleen Bertolino, will be having a pet-friendly party at Woodland Pets & Treats in Mill Valley on Saturday, October 12, at 2 pm. So come for the stories, and stay for the snacks!
To check out the full schedule of Litquake readings with such notables as Adam Mansbach, TC Boyle, and Delia Ephron, go here.
I Heart My Dog’s Brain?
Over the weekend, The New York Times published a brainy Op-ed on dogs by Gregory Berns, author of the upcoming canine cognition book, How Dogs Love Us.
So do our pooches fall in love with their heart or their head? Read the book to find out! (NYT)
Not Just About Dogs…
Delia Ephron, sister of the late romantic comedy legend, Nora Ephron, has a new book out called Sister Mother Husband Dog, Etc. It’s more about human family members than dogs — but still an enjoyable read. You can read my full review here.
And don’t judge the book by its cover, even if it does bear a remarkably similar jacket to the recent lit hit, Mother Daughter Me by Katie Hafner (right).
Soul Mammals!
Just in case there was any doubt how close we feel to the animals in our lives, Dr. Vint Virga’s new book, The Soul of All Living Creatures, explains it all. Virga also discussed the human-animal connection on a recent radio interview on WNYC’s The Leonard Lopate Show.
Dogtripping, yeah!
If you’re planning a big summer vacation on the road with your dog, then you might want to check out David Rosenfelt’s Dogtripping. But this book is more than just a funny Chevy Chase dog story — it’s about Rosenfelt’s account of moving 25 dogs (yes, 25!) from California to Maine, as he and his wife start up their dog rescue, The Tara Foundation, which has found thousands of new homes for foster dogs. Danielle Steel Presents The Joy of Dogs!
Looks like hopeless romantic, Danielle Steel, is going to be romancing the bone in her next book, Pure Joy: The Dogs We Love, which goes on sale in late October.
Pig In A Wheelchair Gets Book Deal!
Move over bacon — here comes something meatier! Fresh off Grumpy Cat scoring a movie deal — the Youtube celeb, Chris P. Bacon (aka “Crispy Bacon”), who was born without the use of his hind legs, has gotten himself a cushy 3-book deal from his popular Pig In A Wheelchair videos.(EW)
How Animals Grieve by Barbara King
If you don’t think animals have just as many feelings over losing loved ones as we humans do, then you should read How Animals Grieve by Barbara King…(NPR)
And just in case you need more proof, see for yourself as Tarra the elephant mourns over losing her pal, Bella the dog.
Remember the Dog!
During this upcoming Memorial Day weekend, it’s our obligation to honor the brave men and women who serve — and have served — our country so admirably. And judging by the recent spate of popular military dog books (Trident K9 Warriors and Until Tuesday, to name a few), it’s also important to remember that there have been some incredibly heroic dogs earning their stripes, too — as you can read about in this Dogtime article commemorating 5 War Dogs from U.S. history.
It’s About the Dog…
Joe and Cathy Connolly’s book, If I Should Die Before My Dog, may be a sad concept to many dog lovers — but this isn’t a sad book. In fact, this handsome doggie diary could save your pet’s life!
Don’t just take my word for it — check out all the good reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.

K9 Warriors!
Wanna meet the top 1% of dogs? Then you should’ve watched 60 Minutes last night because it featured the work of America’s most elite Navy SEALS DOGS — who are trained by ex-SEAL, Mike Ritland. Catch the segment here.
Oh yeah, and Ritland’s also written a book about his military dog training experiences called Trident K9 Warriors: My Tale From the Training Ground to the Battlefield with Elite Navy SEAL Canines. (60 Minutes)
A Dog Walks Into A Nursing Home…
Hope you don’t mind if I judge a book by its cover — but I think that the new jacket for A Dog Walks Into A Nursing Home by Sue Halpern is not only adorable, but truly warms the soul. So if you (or your soul) is feeling under the weather, you might want to pre-order the book now since it doesn’t officially go on sale until May 16, 2013.
Move over, Nurse Ratched and all you cuckoo candy stripers — here comes a real therapy dog!
The Art of Dog Naming…
Jan Hoffman and Alexandra Horowitz (author of Inside of A Dog) try to figure out how we come up with the names we do for our loved ones in The New York Times.
Most dog cognition experts suggest sticking to one or two syllables. I, myself, personally have learned to stay away from pet names that rhyme with “No!” (NYT)
