Hitler’s Talking Dogs?
Historians knew that Hitler loved art — but in a 2011 New York Times column by Maureen Dowd, she discusses Dr. Jan Bondeson’s book, Amazing Dogs, in which he reveals that Hitler once supported a German school to teach large mastiffs to talk to humans. Luckily, it didn’t work — considering Adolf’s atrocious background, I can’t imagine those dogs were treated very well.
Of course, nowadays, everybody knows the world’s most famous canine blabber is Youtube’s Mishka the Talking Dog…
What’s A Dog For? by John Homans
This question, and many more, are brought out of the doghouse in John Homans’s informative new dog book as he discusses domestic life with his lab mix, Stella — as well as the overall explosion in dog ownership in America (from 53 million in 1996 to 77 million in 2010).
The author questions if we as a people are becoming more isolated — or, perhaps, it’s just harder to make true, loyal friends in today’s fast-paced Internet age? (NYT)

Alfred Hitchcock may be dubbed “The Master of Suspense”, but after reading thriller writer Dean Koontz’s A Big Little Life, a tender, thoughtful ode to his late Golden Retriever, Trixie Koontz (who also penned a few books herself) — I think no dog could be prouder of its master…
Not to mention, Mr. Koontz also donates much of his time and money to Canine Companions for Independence.
What Merrill Markoe Taught Me About Dogs
