Best In Dog Show?
The 137th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show wraps up tonight at NYC’s Madison Square Garden and the pressure’s on the bulldogs…judges?
The Wall Street Journal discusses the perils of being a dog show judge. (WSJ)
Hitler’s Talking Dogs?
Historians knew that Hitler loved art — but in a 2011 New York Times column by Maureen Dowd, she discusses Dr. Jan Bondeson’s book, Amazing Dogs, in which he reveals that Hitler once supported a German school to teach large mastiffs to talk to humans. Luckily, it didn’t work — considering Adolf’s atrocious background, I can’t imagine those dogs were treated very well.
Of course, nowadays, everybody knows the world’s most famous canine blabber is Youtube’s Mishka the Talking Dog…

Underwater Dogs!
How come nobody thought of this before? Seth Casteel presents Underdog — er, Underwater Dogs, a funny, artful photo book on dogs hamming it up beneath the surface.
I Want To Kill the Dog?
Meredith Viera’s hubby, Richard Cohen, has a darkly funny take on his relationship with their family dog in I Want To Kill the Dog…
Don’t worry, dog advocates: this book is just a light-hearted love-hate spoof. At least I hope so. Or else they’ll be getting some hate tweets!
Ebay’s New Dog Commercial
Let’s face it: as a dog owner, we’ve all been there. Whether it’s an expensive dress, a favorite pair of slippers, or a fancy piece of furniture….(eBay)
Aimee Mann’s Labrador
Singer-songwriter, Aimee Mann, has a new album out called Charmer — and my favorite track is her new single, Labrador. Although the song seems mostly about human relationships judging by the lyrics (“I’m a labrador/’Cause I come back for more…”), I’m sure there’s a real life dog story behind it. After all, there must be a reason she didn’t call it French Bulldog or Rhodesian Ridgeback!
Check out the Labrador video here with Jon Hamm.
Tour de Dog?
It appears that one unleashed pooch tripped up this year’s Tour de France bicycle race…Call me cruel — but judging from this video, I’m more worried about the dog!
It’s Not Just A Dog…
Even Johnny Depp agrees that it’s NOT just a dog, as you can see here in this memorable scene from the 2004 film, Finding Neverland…
Seeing Red
Just caught this dark, strangely compelling Brian Cox flick on cable called Red (not to be confused with the more recent Bruce Willis-Helen Mirren starrer), which is about a man hell-bent on avenging the murder of his dear old dog.
I’m not a violent person, but what proud dog owner can’t sympathize?
Wes Anderson Doesn’t Like Dogs?
Ian Crouch of The New Yorker is positing the theory that perhaps Wes Anderson, the stylish, erudite director of The Royal Tenenbaums and Moonrise Kingdom, is not a fan of dogs. Personally, I think Mr. Anderson just likes to use his clever humor to subvert the public’s love for pups, but you can decide for yourself by reading the article here.
One Nation Under Dog
HBO’s new documentary, One Nation Under Dog, is not for everybody, but it is essential viewing for any dog lover. It will warm your heart one minute — and then break it the next — as it covers the gamut from brave dog rescuers and dog trainers, to irresponsible dog owners and the raiding of puppy mills…
As Dog As It Gets…
I’m a huge fan of show dogs — and one of the more memorable dogs on the silver screen in recent years was Verdell, the mugsy Brussels Griffon, in As Good As It Gets. If you can steal a scene from Jack Nicholson, then you must be doing something right!
This Dog’s Got Talent!
Meet Pudsey, the ultimate show dog in a new kind of dog show, Britain’s Got Talent…
