Hitler’s Talking Dogs?

Historians knew that Hitler loved art — but in a 2011 New York Times column by Maureen Dowd, she discusses Dr. Jan Bondeson’s book, Amazing Dogs, in which he reveals that Hitler once supported a German school to teach large mastiffs to talk to humans. Luckily, it didn’t work — considering Adolf’s atrocious background, I can’t imagine those dogs were treated very well.

Of course, nowadays, everybody knows the world’s most famous canine blabber is Youtube’s Mishka the Talking Dog

I Want To Kill the Dog?

Meredith Viera’s hubby, Richard Cohen, has a darkly funny take on his relationship with their family dog in I Want To Kill the Dogi want to kill the dog richard cohen meredith viera

Don’t worry, dog advocates: this book is just a light-hearted love-hate spoof. At least I hope so. Or else they’ll be getting some hate tweets!

Aimee Mann’s Labrador

Singer-songwriter, Aimee Mann, has a new album out called Charmer — and my favorite track is her new single, Labrador. After all, there must be a reason she didn’t call it French Bulldog or Rhodesian Ridgeback!

Check out the Labrador video here with Jon Hamm.

Just caught this dark, strangely compelling Brian Cox flick on cable called Red (not to be confused with the more recent Bruce Willis-Helen Mirren starrer), which is about a man hell-bent on avenging the murder of his dear old dog.

I’m not a violent person, but what proud dog owner can’t sympathize?

Wes Anderson Doesn’t Like Dogs?

Ian Crouch of The New Yorker is positing the theory that perhaps Wes Anderson, the stylish, erudite director of The Royal Tenenbaums and Moonrise Kingdom, is not a fan of dogs. Personally, I think Mr. Anderson just likes to use his clever humor to subvert the public’s love for pups, but you can decide for yourself by reading the article here.

One Nation Under Dog

HBO’s new documentary, One Nation Under Dog, is not for everybody, but it is essential viewing for any dog lover. It will warm your heart one minute — and then break it the next — as it covers the gamut from brave dog rescuers and dog trainers, to irresponsible dog owners and the raiding of puppy mills…
